Dear People of God,

Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his lair and saw his shadow on Groundhog’s Day. According to tradition, this means six more weeks of winter. Connecticut’s own prognosticator, Chuckles the groundhog, didn’t see her shadow and predicted an early spring. Given that we had a major snow storm at the end of October and relatively mild temperatures since, it’s anyone’s guess what the weather in February will be like. For those of us who like some degree of certainty in our lives, here are some things that we can definitely count on this month at St. Andrew:

• Sunday February 5- Scout Sunday.
• Sunday February 12- Healing Service.
• Sunday February 19-Transfiguration of Our Lord.
• February 22 Ash Wednesday Service of Holy Communion with Imposition of Ashes at 7:00 p.m. (preceded by Soup Supper at 6:00 p.m.)
• Sunday February 29-1st Sunday in Lent.

As we prepare to begin our Lenten journey, we are invited into a solemn period repentance. This time of “turning to the Lord,” is an opportunity to turn away from those things that get in the way of following the two great commandments: to love God completely and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Lenten is also a time to be concerned with justice. The traditional Lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving are intended to help us be renewed in justice toward God (prayer), justice toward ourselves (fasting) and justice toward others (almsgiving).

I pray that this will be a Holy Lent for all of us. Even more important than our choice of how best to observe the Lenten disciplines is our willingness to be led through these forty days by the Holy Spirit. May we enter into this season trusting that no matter where the Spirit leads, we are never alone.

In Christ,

Pastor Paul
